The next week, I went this shop again, I found it again. The master said ‘Play it, please’. The strings are old, but it has a good sound. The model name is CE800S.Anyhow, I got it.
When it tries inspecting, the CE800S is Cat's Eyes brand which was sold in approximately 80 years (Tokai musical instrument production: the Japanese total agency of Martin guitars in 70’-80’ ) with the limited products replica of 50th ages Martin D-18. Because the top the spruce, perhaps, is a silk pattern cleanly, it is thought that it is sitka spruce. This guitar's grain is very fine which we can not see in existence D-18. The back and side are mahogany, the extent clean surface which this is mistaken for the rose wood. As for the saddle is long type of course, as for the nut and the saddle the cow bone. Pegs are original ones of the Tokai musical instrument. Both pick guard and binding tortoise-like one. The bracing is scarped type. D-18 of 50th age has been reproduced truly faithfully. The difference is about to be logograph of the head and polyurethane paint. Truly the sound which the dreadnought seems does. Balance to bass is good from the treble. I can get the same sound quality and the same volume at any fret. It can be satisfied entire volume. Securely it is the large serious guitar. Actually, this guitar is not at hand now. While I was playing this guitar, I did not have the D - 18, so I wanted a real Martin D - 18. I sold it because the musical instrument store purchased at a price higher than my purchase price, and I bought D - 18. It was a failure! CE 800 S was better than D-18 that was obviously purchased. Also, I hope I can meet each other. Therefore, that D-18 was also sold.
This guitar has a closely related guitar called CE 700 S. It is the same series with S at the end. It was a replica of Martin D - 21. Martin D - 21 seems to have used rosewood (Indian rosewood or Brazilian rosewood, Jacaranda) on side, back and fingerboard. Top is spruce and neck is mahogany. It seems that it was manufactured from 1955 to 1969. Pickguards and body trims are tortoiseshell patterns. Cat's Eyes CE 700s seems to be using rosewood (layered, not Jacaranda) on the back, side, and rosewood on fingerboard. The price was 70000 yen.
Cat's Eyes CE800Sは東海楽器がつくったオールドD-18レプリカだ。
これは楽器店ではなく古道具屋で購入したもの。数年前、ふらっとある店に入ると結構雰囲気のある茶色いギターケースが目に入った。ケースを開けると懐かしい「Cat’s Eyes」のロゴ、派手さの一切ないロングサドルのギターであった。一見してオールドD-18のレプリカだとわかるギター。店主にこのギターについて尋ねると「なにかよさそうなことがわかったけど値段が付けられないでいるので、まだ売れない。」とのこと。この古道具屋は面白いものをたくさん置いてある店なのだけれど楽器はインテリアに近い扱いの店。そこに、このギターが来てしまい困っている様子だ。その日はそのまま退散した。
1週間後、例のギターはまだあった。弾いてもよいとのことなので弾いてみる。弦が古いがしっかりとした音、状態もよい。見た目も多少の打痕はるがきれい、型番はCE800S。型番から発売当時の価格は8万円だということはわかる。結局、数万円で購入した。
調べてみるとCE800Sは80年前後に売られたCat’s Eyesブランド（東海楽器製造）のリミテッド・プロダクツで50年代Martin D-18のレプリカ。トップはスプルース、多分、きれいにシルク模様があるのでシトカだと思われる。木目は現行D-18には有り得ない細かさ、美しさ。バック・サイドはもちろんマホガニー、これもローズウッドと間違えるくらいきれいな目。サドルはもちろんロングでナットとサドルは牛骨。ペグはクルーソンタイプで製造した東海楽器のオリジナルのもの。ピックガード、バインディングともに鼈甲柄。ブレーシングはスキャロップド・ブレーシング。本当に忠実に50年代のD-18を再現している。違いはヘッドのロゴとポリウレタン塗装であることくらいだ。当時、東海楽器はMartinの日本総代理店だったのでここまで忠実なレプリカを作れたのであろう。今、Martinがやっていることをそのころやっていたとも言えなくはない（もちろん、価格設定などから、できる範囲でではあろうが）。
弦を張替え、少し化粧直しをすると輝きを取り戻した。本当にドレッドノートらしい音がする。高音から低音までのバランスはよい。どのフレットでもばらつきのない音質と音量が得られる。全体的な音量は満足できる。きちんとまとまった真面目なギターだ。弾いていて気持ちがよい、ペグがちょっと不安だが。でもデザイン的にはこのペグであろう。普段、12弦ギターばかり弾いているのだが久々に6弦をいじりたくさせてくれるギターであった。
実は、今はこのギターは手元にない。このギターを弾いているうちに、D-18を持っていなかったので、本物のMartinのD-18が欲しくなったのだ。購入価格より高い価格で楽器店が引き取ってくれるということで売却し、D-18を購入した。失敗だった！明らかに購入したD-18より、CE800Sのほうがよかった。また、巡り合えるとよいのだが。結局、そのD-18には満足できずに、それも売却した。
